Would you like to live in Vila de Gracia? At first this territory was dependent on Barcelona and was sparsely populated. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, near the existing, isolated farmhouses, three convents were installed (among them, that of the Josepets) and a series of towers promoted by the Barcelona bourgeoisie. During the first half of the 19th century, that small agricultural nucleus became the most important town on the Barcelona plain, thanks to its progressive industrialization, taking advantage of the availability of free land. Gràcia became an independent municipality in 1850, at which time the town had more than 13,000 inhabitants. In 1877, the population reached 33,000 inhabitants. The advisability of integrating it into Barcelona was raised with increasing force, in parallel with the progressive development of the Cerdà Plan, then in full expansion. Thus, from 1880 projects of common interest were born, such as the Passeig de Gràcia, which linked the town with the big city following the old path. When it was finally joined back to Barcelona, ??in 1897, Gràcia had almost 62,000 inhabitants and was a very populated and active city, but with a great lack of facilities and services. Little by little, streets were built that connected the neighborhood internally and externally, and facilities such as the Llibertat (1893) and Abaceria Central markets. Urbanization was often done autonomously by the landowners, which explains the name changes and physical discontinuity of some streets, as well as the numerous plazas, usually one on each property. Gràcia has always had and maintains an active political and social life and a rich fabric of civic, cultural, recreational, artistic and sporting institutions with deep popular roots.
